Shared Memories

How They Met

1955 - Jean was 20 years old and was a glass collector in 'Hollins Grove Liberal Club' Darwen,

Ken was 24 years old and just returned from Egypt doing his 3 years National services,

Ken was enjoying a nice pint one day and also enjoying getting an eyeful of the tasty young lady behind the bar (Jean of course) and there started the sparks flying,

They courted for approx 18 months -2 years before marrying on the 23 rd February 1957 at the Chapels Congregational Church Darwen, then moved on to reception at Victoria Hotel , Suddel Road , Darwen where the celebrations began,

Their first house was Whalley Street , Darwen which Ken purchased off his parents at a cost of £350, which then was a lot of money!

Jean couldn’t wait to have a baby so they got to it straight away,

Then before you know along came there first born a beautiful bouncing baby boy

'Ian' born on the 14th April 1958

Words of Loraine

Jean and I met when our parents became great friends, May and Jack, Irene and Stan. It must have been about 1948.

Jean was at least 18 months older than me so we weren't in the same year, we would meet on the corridors at Avondale school.

In the late 40's we all went to Butlins Skegness with our parents, It was great fun, we have plenty of photo's of our happy times.George and I are about the same age, my diary of January 1951 records us making model areoplanes and sledging!

I remember the happy day when Jean & Ken were married. I went to the wedding with my mum and dad.

Our lives crossed now and then when May & Jean, Mum and I went to various events.

I spent alot of time abroad though, so meeting's were few.

We began to meet from time to time in the 90's. It was always such a pleasure to see Jean and sometimes Sharon with our mums. We would rememeber those happy times, the holidays in particular.

Later I really admired Jeans courage and cheerfulness in spite of the odds, and with her all the familys loving support.

East Lancs Hospice

This is where Jean spent quite a lot of time in her last few months.

One of Jeans last wishes for the funeral service was only flowers from family and she would like anyone else to make donations to the hospice, the amount raised was 145 pounds.

If anyone wishes to make any further donations to the hospice unfortunately to date they don't have an internet service for this, however it is possible by sending a cheque to the following adress.

East Lancs Hospice
Park Lee Road
Blackburn
Lancashire
BB2 3NY

All donations regardless of how large or small will be Greatly appreciated.

Cure For All Diseases

One Minute Cure

I wish I had known about this a couple of years ago but if you know anyone who is suffering from a terrible disease you may want to take a look at this.

Use your own judgement but I know I would have definitely tried it when my mother was sick if I had known about it.

Why would I put such an advert here?

Because if I can save at least one person from having to go through what our Mother had to go through then it's worth it.

I would be interested in what you think about this yourself, I've written a short article about it on my blog and if you can find the time please leave a comment , You can read it here
